Work Experiences
Professor , Department of Public Health, College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan, since August 1996. Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in public health, the sociology of health and illness, the political economy of health and health care, international health, and comparative health care systems, and conduct research in workers’ health, medicalization of the public health system, health policy, globalization and health, comparative health care systems, and health inequality.
 
President, Taiwan Association for Promoting Public Health, Since 2008.
 
Director and Founding Chairperson, Department of Public Health, College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan, August 1997 -July 2003. Coordinated the development and was the first chairperson of the graduate program in public health.
 
Assistant and Associate Professor, The Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy, School of Social Service Administration, The University of Chicago, October 1988 – July 1996. Taught graduate courses and conducted research in sociology of health and illness, political economy of health and health care, cross-national comparative methodology, and comparative health care systems.
 
Social Survey Director, International Collaborative Study of Oral Health Outcomes (ICS II), the World Health Organization (WHO), July 1987 - August 1995. Designed the conceptual framework and the methodology of the ICS II; developed the protocol, questionnaires, and field training materials; and conducted comparative analysis of the major determinants of the oral health status among the seven ICS II participating countries. ICS II is an eight year international dental study conducted by WHO in collaboration with The University of Chicago.
